I don't want to open the can of worms of trying to answer this question, but I would like to point out a fallacy in your reasoning. A lack of evidence for something does not mean that it cannot be so, as you have said. Even still, not having evidence of something doesn't mean that there is no evidence for it. In any case, I would recommend that if you're wondering about this, then you should do some research. You might find the answers you're looking for, and it may well be something worth looking into.
