He was so gentle he would sit on you lap and purr for hours. But he was so tough he whipped up on all the cats and dogs in the neighborhood. It was really funny watching a large dog being chased by a cat. I don't know that he ever lost a fight, but one day he left and didn't come back.

Ya know, aerial combat is known as "dogfighting", and, during the World Wars especially, when a lot of fighters were duking it out, the resulting mass of planes circling and wheeling in the sky was referred to as a "furball".
