Britain didn't really lose...they just kinda gave up and said "Okay fine, be independent. You'll be sorry." Britain had too much other stuff to worry about than some rebellious colonies. They figured we'd be begging to take us back in a few years.
Also, logistics. Like Howard said, they were supplying an army from an ocean away, without the naval technology that we have today.
Guerrilla warfare also had a good bit to do with it. Britain's tactics were horrible. Plus, those bright red suits made great targets.
Didn't the Americans also have superior commanders? Most of Britain's commanders in the colonies were "royal appointees" or whatever, meaning they were politicians who didn't have a clue. Am I correct?
