My mom loves to tell the story of how, as a child, she told her Army seargent father that a lower ranking officer had said a "terrible" word in front of her. My grandfather tried for hours to get my mother to say what the word was, but to her, it was so awful, she couldn't bear to repeat it. My grandfather finally took the private to task anyway, delivering a stern and bitter, very public dressing down, which was made worse by the fact that the young man seemed to use obscenity so nonchalantly that he couldn't remember saying anything offensive in front of his superior officer's daughter.

Turned out later that the word was "p*ss."
