GOA -- So ... what now?

I don't know what to do. I've wandered around the Village of Boredom, Larosis, and Llagimlyn, talking to everyone and entering all the buildings. Blood Drops is too busy to talk to me, and I can't find anything to do with the magnifying lens, apples, etc. I don't have enough money to buy the horse (which I'm guessing I need to cross the desert) and I can't find a way to raise more. I heard that many tried to take a picture in the banquet hall, so I distracted the cook and servers. I got to the hall while they were still cleaning up, but there was no option to take a picture (then again, no one in the game has asked me to do this). I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do next.

Guard's Sword

Stone of Strengthening
Key of Opening

Food Rations

Map

6 Apples
Tinderbox
Clear Focus Stone

Rope is hanging off the battlement.
