The gag (such as it is) is that you make your listener stand there for several minutes while the incredibly long joke is being told, and then when the punchline comes, it has nothing to do with the buildup. The listener then gets all angry and beats you into a pulp, which is where all the humor really comes from, according to Category #1 of "How to be Funny".
