I don't like the idea of drugging children in that manner. Treatment like your brother received seems a better solution. It worked for my nephew as well.

But it doesn't work for everyone. Yes, ADD and ADHD are often diagnosed when that's not the real issue, but they're both legitimate ailments. I know, because I have ADD.

For those not in the know, Attention Deficit Disorder has to do with an imbalance in brain chemistry. As I understand it, the issue is that certain chemicals (I think they're called neurotoxins or something, although I may be completely wrong) needed to complete neural pathways in the brain are either not there or not plentiful enough. What drugs like Ritalin do is provide the missing ingredients.

I know I can certainly see a different in my mind, depending on if I've had my Ritalin or not... without it, it is MUCH harder to concentrate, and I become much more likely to make spontaneous (and usually stupid) decisions. With it, I'm less impulsive and can concentrate on something as well as any normal person. There's a definete difference, and I don't think it's a placebo effect. People that know me in real life can usually tell within five minutes if I've had my pill or not. ;) The difference can be that great.
