I'm afraid that the writers won't leave the book alone, and will go splice-happy with events and dialogue. I hope that they'll realize that the truer the movie stays to the book, the bigger a hit it'll be with critics and moviegoers alike.

From what I understand about it - and I don't have this firsthand from the studio or any suchlike thing, so keep in mind that it may not be correct - there has been extensive tampering. Specifically, Arwen Evenstar has been expanded into the "strong female lead" of the movie, because people were all complaining that the books were obviously sexist. That, to my thinking (I'm a bit of a Tolkien purist), is an unforgivable mangling of what Mr. T actually wrote. Arwen is what could only graciously be referred to as a "minor character" (in actuality, "extra" would be a much more accurate term).

Anyhow, if anyone goes to see it, would you please report on the status of that rumour?

As it stands, Harry Potter is one of the few movies in quite a while (along with Shrek) that I'm actually interested in seeing. I've never read any of the books, but from what I've seen of the film, it looks good. I'll check it out when it comes out on DVD.
