Your first point was, fundamentally, the same as mine; you said that judgments must be made on a case-by-case basis, which was rather my point. But some policy must be followed towards people we don't know, and my choice is to pursue what I consider courtesy rather than not to because someone might find it offensive. As for "being tolerated" rather than to "do the tolerating," well, I point you at Socrates and Plato:
