The hint you got last time was not lame; it made perfect sense, and was given to you by the man who wrote the game. I'm not going to give you a better hint, but I will clarify.

If you have the option to give the dagger to somebody, try it. If it doesn't work, then keep playing other parts of the game. Don't focus so much on one item--the fact that you have it doesn't mean that you have yet reached the place where you could use it.
