If one person tries to force their beliefs on another and completely ignores anything that the other person has to say, the 'conversation', if it can even be called that, is worthless. If done correctly, however, such conversations can contribute to a greater understanding of beliefs on *both* sides, even if the beliefs of those involved didn't change and even if disagreements remain.

Exactly. I have had such a conversation with someone recently. And it really did go a long ways towards helping me to figure out what *I* believe, and to figure out *why*. It had a very profound effect on me, and I am currently trying to figure it out completely so that I can post here about how much that one conversation meant to me. When gone about correctly, conversations about beliefs can do a whole lot.
