When one uses proper grammar, one can more effectively express oneself.
The problem with online speech patterns is that the constant repetition of misspellings can be habit forming. If one constantly types or writes the number "2" when they mean "to" or "too", eventually they will start to do this off-line as well. It's a dumbing down of society.
Proper grammar, spelling, and capitalization will imply that the author is educated. When I read poorly-written posts or online comments with atrocious spelling, I infer that the author is not that educated, does not know how to express themselves effectively, or is an idiot.
No, the syntax is not more important that the content. Without proper syntax, the content can be near-impossible to read.
