I always knew that "he" and "Man" (capital necessary) were neutral, but it was in a subconcious and unspoken sort sort of way. Whenever I refer to "Man" I mean "everyone throughout history." That's how the word's been used in the past. Whenever I refer to the all-encompassing "Man" I think I make it obvious to my audience what my meaning is through my inflection, connotation and by the knowledge among those who know me that I'm not sexist.

it bugs me that I have to change how I speak just because someone only recognizes one definition of a word that has many. It's like saying that the word "set" can only mean a group of related objects and not a verb synonymous with "place" or the name of an Egyptian deity.
