Here's another couple of things I picked up whilst reading, of all things, a guide to playing 'Driver' (PlayStation) well. They do also apply to real life...I know, because my dad says he uses both of them.
1). When driving in more or less a stright line with no crossings or traffic lights close, don't just watch the car in front of you. Watch the car in front and the car in front of that one as well, so you're watching the TWO in front of you. Helps if, say, that second one suddenly dives down a side street, you can anticipate the guy in front suddenly whacking the brakes, or not as the case may be.
2). Don't watch the cars themselves. Watch the lights on their backsides. That's what they're there for.
