I'm not sure you have the right idea of what democracy is. Democracy isn't letting everybody do what they want. It's making everybody do what *most of the people* want. Sometimes you have to force some of them. Why else do you imagine we need police, whether they're armed or not? Sure, in some hypothetical *perfect* democracy everybody would voluntarily be law-abiding and restrict their lives in return for the advantages democracy brings, but that's never going to happen. So we walk the fine line between what we're prepared to give up and what we ask of our government in return. Democracy isn't a perfect system, but it's as close as government is ever going to get.

Every day, you go around in your democracy being forced to do what you do not want to do. Physical force and the use of weapons should *always* be a last resort, whether on a global scale or a local one, but there will always be situations where this response is necessary.
