I think that's true for me too. Because I already *knew* people are capable of doing evil things, the terrorist attacks shocked me but didn't *surprise* me in that sense. The knowledge that the vast majority of people are capable of doing good things, and responding to evil with good ... well, call me cynical, but we don't tend to hear about that so much in everyday life. It doesn't usually make news coverage. So it comes as a pleasant surprise, and is very inspiring and heartwarming, when it's brought to our attention on a large scale.

A couple of times in the last few days I've reacted differently to another person than I normally would, because of all this. The first time, I was thinking something complimentary about a stranger I was dealing with at work, and I actually *said* so instead of just thinking it. The second time, I *didn't* say what I was thinking to a co-worker, in spite of the fact that if being stupid was a crime this guy would be in the maximum security cellblock. It just seems that you get a bit more perspective on things like that when you can see CNN coverage on the TVs in the background.
