I definately like long ones. If the post is too short the fence is too close to the ground and the cows and goats and pigs can jump over. But if you use a long post, say 8 feet or so you can sink them deep into the ground and still have enough heighth to keep the critters in. It takes a mighty big hog to root out an eight foot post that is two or three feet into the ground. Short posts are ok for turtles, but I don't know anybody who raises them.
