Wow, what food for thought. There's pros and cons to both kinds of posts, naturally. Short posts have lots of advantages. They're short, obviously, and this is an advantage because they're easier to transport around. Short posts are also not as heavy. However, while long posts are somewhat awkward to move around and put in position, they do have a great many good uses, such as for stringing electrical wire, putting up streetlights, or even sticking a mailbox on top as a gag and calling it "air mail." I laugh every time I see one of those.

Still, short posts seem to be more versatile than long posts. I can think of a lot more uses for them. Real mailboxes. Fences. Porch rails. Decorative pillars. Places to set up empty cans for riflery practice. The list goes on and on.

But, you can't just nail ten short posts together and put up a streetlight on it. Not gonna work. Can't do it. Gotta have a long post.

So, I guess my conclusion is, I don't have a favorite. Both are equally useful and important. The only difference I can see in who is posting them would be how much they charge per hour.
