I don't know how to get to the thing in the birds nest (key for machine?). I've been going round and round and can't see what else to do.

I have a feeling I'm horribly near the beginning but I don't know how to get past the wood elf. As far as I'm aware I've tried every option three times. I've broken the wall, been right round the cave, taken a trip on the boat.
