Actually, I'm almost certain that people *would* have attacked him, had his ideas come earlier. The church locked Newton away, and he delt with less crazy things than Hawkings does. Why Newton has lost almost all critics is because we can prove the things he said. We can't *prove* the things Darwin said, so the controversy between him and the church and whatnot is still there. Since then the world has become a much more open-minded place, giving people like Hawkings lots of room to do their thang.
