Sam, I finally decided that I didn't care what my coworkers thought, so I tried this with a big glass of water with crushed ice in it. It didn't work very well. The water rotated with me unless I kicked off with a good shove, and even then it only remained stationary for a few seconds before it began to rotate with me.
Do you think it's the floating ice makes the difference? Or is water just unsuitable for this procedure? I'll still have to try this at home with hot chocolate or coffee.
