Actually, you'd be surprised. I've been to the Atlantic and Canadian lakes, and I can say that a Canadian mountain lake (or stream) formed out of fresh glacial melt is pretty DARN cold. I didn't set foot in them... because I didn't dare. Just a dipping in a finger was enough for that. Brrrrr. Of course, whether it's ACTUALLY colder than the ocean... I don't know. But it's REALLY cold.
That said, most of those Canadian glacial lakes are absolutely beautiful. My favorite, Lake Louise... which is located around the Banff area, which is in turn within a day's drive (if memory serves) from Calgary... is the most beautiful lake I've ever seen in my lake, and I've seen a LOT of lakes, all over the world. :) Nothing like that vivid crystalline blue shade of water, cupped by snowcapped mountains, with a gorgeous glacier looming at one end. Absoutely amazing.
