Yes, actually. Fish drown in air because the filaments in their gills stick together when not immersed in water. The surface area of the gills is decreased and the fish can't glean enough oxygen from the O2 rich air to survive.

Conversely, there are some liquids that mammals CAN breathe, but I forget what they are.
