It's not fair to compare a Mondeo with a Ka, unless costs enter the comparison. The Mondeo is nearly twice as expensive as a Ka. The Mondeo can carry 4 people with luggage in comfort (5 if they're friends), whereas the Ka is 2-person-and-maybe-an-infant-(not a baby, cause their 'luggage' needs a bus)-car. I don't understand why a garage would give you that replacement.

The new Mini is not ugly, just pointless - especially when compared to the original. To be fair, I haven't seen it in the flesh yet. However, first reports (from an english car magazine, so don't trust them with your life) actually claim that it handles extremely well for the money, the reason being that BMW payed for high-class engineering before selling Rover, enabling the new owners to sell the Mini for a lower price than normally expected.
