You bring up a point that has a bunch of academic, ie. public, researchers irked. Recently the press focused on the group in private industry that fertilized an egg in order to get stem cells. This is abhorrent to most. The questions are: 1) why did they do this procedure in the middle of a heated debate; and 2) why did they make it so public? Just a guess, but it seems that the private industry tries to get some 'public' research to become moral issues in order to get the public funding dropped. This way, when the private sector does make their technological leap, they've done it without any competition. And when it comes to the private sector, sometimes money is the only morality.
