That's about the size of it. Of course, my trying to give a 'reasonable' reply is different from replying in a way that was actually wise. :-(

One of my close relatives organizes a C.A.R.E. home for people like schizophrenics who need to get back on their feet. Yes, they can sometimes do and say fairly crazy things -- like literally throwing the computer right out the apartment window if they're frustrated with email. But they are still interesting people with thoughts and feelings and hopes like anyone.

I could mention something that has been disturbing me deeply about this disorder, however. Many schizophrenics are often intensely religious and pray continuously with Him and Christ by name. They "pray without ceasing" in every sense of the famous phrase as the Carmelite monk, Brother Lawrence, once used it. And yet their lives and minds remain devastated by a disorder that destroys people in their prime, striking down athletes and Ph.D. students. You could see something of this religious fervor in Kreskas gael's rants and postings (now deleted). I don't know what to think of the utter sincerity and overwhelming intensity of these persons. They pray, and they can witness all the right things, and they really believe it -- but they're crazy. It can be very troubling.
