I have a certain small interest in war poetry, and occasionally, friends forward me interesting pieces they find. This is one that I got emailed a couple of days ago:

Under The Monument
Who are the dead That we should honor them with Granite monuments of Bleating sheep and bleading men? Do they climb up From the dirt in darkest night To run their senseless fingers Over the smooth and dew-wet stone?
Honor the living, For only the living can Pull us from the pit. Can you tell them from the shadows, Would you give them a home? Will you take what they're giving, Or lie beneath your monument, All alone?

Unfortunatly, there was very little in the way of attribution. It's credited to "An ANZAC soldier, WWI". If anyone could provide more details, I would be very appreciative.
