According to "Ka Lei Ha'aheo: Beginning Hawaiian" by Alberta Pualani Hopkins, "Hawaiian has five vowels, a e i o u, and eight consonants, h k l m n p w ' ('okina)." Eight plus five is thirteen. In addition, each vowel has a long form indicated by a macron. These don't count as separate letters, but you'd probably want to factor them in.
