(Well, some words in *my* language may have also three or four alternative spellings, some of which are poetry/literary variations of the term).

Rather than decreasing literacy rate, I think that lexicography should follow language evolution - the evolution that changed "thou art" into "you are", but also the evolution that comes from multiethnic communities, in which English, Spanish and other languages mix up.
