I am not trying to be contrary--I do not have any reason to disbelieve this, but I have never heard about it before and find it very intriguing as a concept. I would be interested in learning more about it.
I would refer you to "Very Special Intelligence: The Story of the Admiralty's Operational Intelligence Centre, 1939-1945" by Patrick Beesley, "The Cicero Spy Affair: German Access to British Secrets in World War II (Perspectives on Intelligence History)" by Richard Wires, "Codebreakers: The Inside Story of Bletchley Park" by Frank Hindsley and Alan Stripp and "The Double-Cross System: The Incredible True Story of How Nazi Spies Were Turned into Double Agents" by J. C. Masterman and Norman Pearson.
These deal mainly with the British actions (as I'm sure you can understand, that's where my interest lies), but there are references to the US actions as well. Also, they concern the discovery of the German plots more than the Bitish response to them. It has been a couple of years since I have studied this area of the war in detail, and I would need to spend a couple of days re-acquainting myself with the material before I could provide specific details. I will try to do this before the weekend.
