College Search Question posted by Wes on Friday, June 29, 2001, at 18:08:56:
When I was shopping for schools, one of the ones that looked best on paper did nothing for me emotionally when I visited. I can't really explain it, but I didn't feel particularly comfortable on the campus.
On the other hand, visiting the college I ended up attending felt instantly welcoming and like I was "at home".
Questions I wished I had asked that weren't covered in the materials the schools published:
Is there a grocery within walking distance? What banks are in town? Within walking distance? What is your retention rate for students? Why do most students leave?
I would also ask students what they like/dislike most about the school - what they would change, things like that.
I realize that most of these aren't the kind of thing that makes a school great, but they are things that I didn't think to ask, and if there are a couple of schools that look good, they could be factors.
