Well, what I call a dirt dobber is a type of hornet that actually builds their nests in the ground....not hanging from anything.
Is this what you're talking about too?
I get a nest of them every year near my back door. I just spray a lot of Raid down in the hole and make a mad dash back inside.
I've gotten stung by a hornet once...and that was enough. Although, the scorpion sting was much, much worse. But that's a story for another time...
