Hail Thee,

Just a local remark on that: it is indeed one of the best ways to get rid of them, but here in Germany it is strictly forbidden. So doing it in the night is a good idea, over here, because it reduces the chance of anyone seeing you :-)
For some reason wasps and hornets are protected species that you are not allowed to kill, even if the build their nest within your house somewhere. My parents had a wasps nest in a rarely used room of their house once. The window wasnt completely closed so they had found a way in.
My mother found it one morning, hidden well behind a curtain, and called the fire department number. They told her that she wasnt allowed to kill the wasps and that she should try contacting an expert who should take the nest down and transplant it to a new home. The only expert they knew was a biology teacher at the local school.
Now the teacher in turn told her that he couldn't (or wouldn't) do a thing about the nest, but that for the sake of nature the wasps must not be killed. In the evening my mother filled the nest with anti insect spray. Next day all wasps were dead and the nest was removed. Noone caught us :-)
Bottom Line : everyone official told us that we must not exterminate them, but noone was willing to help in any way. If they want to protect them they should better come and get them !
