Yeah...last summer I took a class in Indian Raga singing (which is a lot of fun and very easy to learn, by the way). Our teacher described their system of notation that included all the inner-tones between the notes of a traditional western dorian/ionian scale. In fact, composers have been dipping into the other less traditional modes. Especially during the 19th century, "impressionist" (even though they weren't REALLy impressionists) composers were getting bored with traditional tonality and even made up scales.
