What example do we in America have that the trial would have ended differently here than there?

Not that i'm hoping comparable cases will pop up, but the U.S. justice system appears to be equally into "rehabilitation" when it comes to dealing with minors' offenses as does this British example (except i doubt the American system would allow for compounding a sentence, as appears to have happened at one point in this case).
