How to keep your brain from rotting in the summer? posted by rivenwanderer on Friday, June 22, 2001, at 11:12:38:
Well, like gabby mentioned, I've found that reading and writing are both wonderful ways to keep the stuff you've supposedly learned locked into your head. So far, I haven't done much this summer other than those two things. I've been reading a lot about Egypt...the cultures, religions, and of course the pyramids and tombs. Oh, and today I bought a lovely 384 page, hard cover book full of nothing but lines and a cute guy looked at me like I was craaaaaazy. But anyway...writing...JOY!
Of course, on Tuesday I start my Psychology classes at the community college, which should be quite, umm...enlightening, to say the least.
My brother's always off at basketball camps, which is great for me cuz it gets him out of my way. *snickering*
I am seriously such a geek, though. I stay up late, watch 80s flicks like 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club, sleep in pretty late, read and read some more, write, and listen to music. Oh, and surf the 'Net, of course. Gee, I dunno...what do I DO? Umm, I know what I'd like to do. I want to go traveling and maybe get a book published.
You could do some volunteer work maybe. One summer I volunteered at a hospital as a candy striper (except they're called "teen volunteers" now), but it didn't last too long. See, the candystriping thing was in the hospital my grandpa had passed away in, and every time I walked by his old room, it freaked me out. I felt bad cuz I'd "graduated" from the training program and everything, but it really freaked me out, so I never went back. In fact, I still have the red and white shirt hanging in the hall closet. But the good parts of the experience were worth it, not to mention the fellow candystripers I became good friends with...now that I think about it, one of the girls was even a guest on the Rosie O'Donnell show.
Well, anyway, I'm a lazy bum, so I'm not really one with tons of ideas. Bungee jump, sky dive, make your own fishing pole, build a raft, start a band, hand out food to the homeless, go on litter patrol, paint a mural, walk people's pets, nurse a baby bird back to health, have a bake sale, catch shoplifters and turn them in, wax tile floors with a muffin, indulge in some karaoke, alphabetize your socks, make a photo collage, paint the walls in your house, make a scrapbook, start a poetry club (I wish), mow lawns for free, visit retirement homes, deliver newspapers, make a potato battery, make your own cheezy music video, memorize a page out of the phone book, invent a GOOD-smelling dandruff shampoo for dogs, build a treehouse, plant plants, make a tire swing and swing in it, sculpt something out of a cheese wedge, make a newsletter and send it to your loved ones, read the book "25,000 Things to be Happy About," create your own language and use it on a day-to-day basis, pretend to be a cowboy and lasso the neighbor's plastic lawn ornaments, collect autographs of famous people and/or people you know will NEVER be famous, memorize the Magna Carta, watch the movie Goof Troop, buy a chinchilla and teach it tricks, and finally...throw a party/get-together and invite people who normally don't get to go to parties.
