Maybe their reputations are about the same in Italy. Other than a couple of films of the variety most Brits (RinkyDinks excluded, naturally) describe as "poncy art house" (Il Postino comes to mind) I wasn't aware that Italy had much of a cinematic industry.

Hollywood, on the other hand has a very strong reputation for releasing undigested pap in huge quantities, with the occasional gem if you look hard enough.

British cinema, in contrast, has a world-renowned reputation for brilliant film-making, putting out films unequalled anywhere in the world. No, really.
