Just an illustration from Mike Toole of Anime Jump about the differences between the subtitled version and the dubbed version of an episode from the Orphen anime:
===
In this scene, the two loveable little trolls, Volcan and Dortin, are in the basement of Cleao's house. Dortin is washing dishes while Volcan chops vegetables. (Specifically, onions!)
--- Japanese Version
[In the original version, Volcan pitches a hissyfit because the onions he's slicing are making him tear up. Dortin tries to reason with him, but he complains about how Orphen got them into this predicament. He ends the scene by making several rather humorous jokes involving onions and how they relate to killing Orphen.]
Dortin: Big brother, if you keep slacking, you'll get yelled at again.
Volcan: Shut up, Dortin! Why am I, the gret Volcan Polkano of Mazmaturia, stuck in this place nonchalantly peeling onions?! Damn, my eyes sting!
Dortin: There's no helping it. After all, this is all happening because of you, big brother. Because you're in debt to that person.
Volcan: That's right! It's THAT person's fault! All this, everything, is that evil, slant-eyed, black sorcerer... it's Orphen's fault!
Dortin: You shouldn't say things like that. After all, he found us this job so we can pay our debt back faster.
Volcan: Naiive! Naiive! Naiive! Don't you see how he uses us?
Dortin: But...
Volcan: Remember this, Orphen! Someday I'll peel you to death, like an onion! Yes, and watch your streaming tears as you die...
Dortin: Big brother, after we finish prepping, we still have cleaning to do. So we better hurry, or...
Volcan: Wait a minute, I could always strangle him with an onion ring. No, no, death by vegetable stir-fry is a hard idea to throw out.
Dortin: Big brother...
--- The dubbed into English version
[Ah, but what's this? All those cute jokes about onions? They're gone! And Orphen didn't just get them into debt, he cheated at cards! (I wonder if this is actually true? Like, in the Japanese version of the story?) In fact, all of the humor in this scene seems to have been surgically removed; Volcan's constant tearing up isn't explained, nor is his toying with onions at the end of the scene. ]
Volcan: Set an extra place for dinner... I can't take it anymore! Why couldn't she have stayed away?
Dortin: What now?
Volcan: Don't you get it? Now she's back from her school, and you know what that means. We'll have to do twice as much work for those two blonde brats! Are you mad, or just stupid?!
Dortin: We're in this predicament because you suck at cards, so just stop screaming and keep slicing.
Volcan: No! He cheated me! I know that he did it! I was up six hands! He used some kind of spell to beat me. Then he reached out his cheating claws and took my money!
Dortin: No, he took our money. And Orphen found us this job so we could repay him, so you should thank him.
Volcan: Thank him? No way! Why you... that headbanded weasel had it rigged!
Dortin: B-but he...
Volcan: Don't be so naiive. The only person Orphen's looking out for is Orphen.
Dortin: Oh, you blame everyone else for your problems, and then walk around thinking you're the martyr... are you listening?
Volcan: Jealous. That's what it is, he's insanely jealous of me. He wishes he was half the man I am.
Dortin: Uh, but you're half the... oh, never mind. ===
