The government (or anyone else for that matter) has no right to take anyone's life, no matter how horrible the crime. Life is precious, and most don't realize it until it has been lost.

There has to be an absolute punishment. If there wasn't a death penalty, then what would you do with the convicted murderer serving three consecutive life sentences when said convict kills a guard while trying to escape from prison? Add on another life sentence? The man had nothing to lose.
