I have a kind of a combination view of the two. Looking at my own past experience, I think that both viewpoints can co-exist, and possibly, that they should. In my last dating relationship, there was a fairly regular flow of compliments and random signs of affection, but they were all genuine (at least from my end, and presumably from my girlfriend's end as well). I don't have a lot of experience, and I suspect that I might be naive in thinking that this could be possible, but I don't think I would want to be in a relationship where I couldn't honestly say and do those things on a regular basis.
I guess that's about it.
