Actually, I'm not primarily thinking of oil as an energy source. And "downfall of civilization" was probably not the right words to use... Or maybe I should've stuck a "modern" in there.
Computers are made largely of plastic, an oil-based product. Many other advanced technologies are also heavily dependent on oil this way. Could computers be made without oil?
The whole world is affected by this kind of interdependency. Unfortunately, I know too little about how machines work. Can you make grease from other things than oil, to lubricate the turbines of a water power plant? Can you make solar panels without oil?

*That* is a whole other matter, to which I might agree. But we have no way of knowing. People have said "The end is near!" for so long already...
