It sounds similar to the whole "President's Day" thing. We Americans used to celebrate two federal holidays in February: Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's Birthday. Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s, those two days were no longer federal holidays and "President's Day" was created.

This was keeping in line with the government's desire to keep its citizens from having any free time.
