I haven't really read any Stephen King (well, Carrie way back when), so I decided to pick up "Desperation" just to see what the fuss was about. Your description of "The Regulators" fits this book -- not great, but it's not terrible either. He could have told the same story in fewer pages. It just seemed too long for the story he wanted to tell.
