If I was a big shot in charge of a sporting event like a ball game or a car race, I would hold auditions for people to sing the national anthem. I would cull people who screech and shout, change the words, or mess up the tune. I think I would have them sign an agreement to sing it the way it was written. Yes, I know that not very many people can reach all the notes in the Star Spangled Banner, but I wouldn't care if they opted for God Save the Queen, if they did it right. I don't see anything wrong with an instrumental national anthem, either. Did you notice the pained look on the faces in the crowd at the Indy 500? I hope they threw that publicity-seeking bum out before the green flag dropped.
