Oh, and come to think of it, I think you've got the symbols and objects backwards. I think what the band director *intended* would be written as:

"Early is 'on time', and on time is 'late'."

That is, when he says to be "on time", you should come early. And when you come on time, he'll consider that late.

Or something.
