you could get around that by having users enter their email addresses (set a cookie so they don't have to do it each time they post), then having the profile driven off the email address, and password protect the profile entry part only.

In other words, for the name Brandon, email shadowkahn@geocities.com. Only the email shadowkahn@geocities.com can have the name Brandon. The profile for shadowkahn@geocities.com is password protected, but if I'm not fooling with my profile, I still don't need a password. That would prevent people from messing with other people's profiles while still keeping the board password free for the message section.
