The best possible Stephen King is "Different Seasons." It's four longish short stories (novellas, if you will), one for each season of the year ("Hope Springs Eternal" being one theme). If they begin to feel familiar, it's because three of them were made into movies: "The Body" is "Stand By Me," "Apt Pupil" I believe had the same name as a movie, and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," which I believe is the best of the four, was shortened in its theatrical form. I always tell people who are a little afraid of Stephen King to read this book; the stories are not scary as much as they are just a little "off." If you're more interested in vintage, gotta finish it before I can sleep fare, go back to "Carrie," "Cujo," or "'Salem's Lot."
