BUY-ern isn't entirely correct... the ern would tend to be pronounced like "urn", which is wrong.
The German name of Munich (München) can't be represented in English at all because English doesn't have an ü sound. French has it, though. Any of you that know any French will know this special sort of accentuated u. That's the German ü.
There's also a lot of Slavic names in the eastern part of Germany. Almost all towns and villages around here have names like Bützow, Kladow, Mirow, Crivitz, Schwerin and so on. The name of the region, though, is Mecklenburg. (might translate to "Mickleburg". Perhaps I'll start saying Gabilgathol-Vorpommern, which is the country I live in.)
