That's about where I realised it wasn't working, too. But I kept thinking - just one more, maybe it's just a temporary dip...

Stephen said that it picked up again at the "Man From Mundania" subseries (which actually starts with the book before MfM, I think, _Heaven Cent_.) I disagree. It was that what finally got me to drop the horrid things for good.

I agree. _For Love Of Evil_ is one of the best things in the series, although I didn't like what it did to God.
_And Eternity_ is... well, how can I put it? "Blech blech blech blech blech" gives you the general idea, but doesn't convey the depth of feeling.

I think Piers Anthony's problem, or part of it, is that he keeps going on past the natural life of the series.

Incarnations of Immortality was originally supposed to be only five volumes. He let himself be talked into doing Satan and God as well; the book about Satan raised the standard of the series, but that was more than compensated for by the book about God.

The Apprentice Adept series - a trilogy. Plus four books, none of which are any near the quality of the originals.

[snip several other examples]

And, of course, Xanth. It started out as a trilogy, too, and look what happened to *it*.
