Actually, Martin Gardner did quite a bit of work with that particular question. I don't recall which book of his it was in... it was something about symmetry; that was the theme... I also, unfortunately, don't quite remember his conclusion. It has something to do with the plane of orientation of the mirror, and how it only reverses the plane perpendicular to itself (so if you lie the mirror on the floor and stand on top of it, it does reverse your "up and down" but not your "left and right").
